Rested & Rejuvenated!!!

SSMS IS READY TO RISE ABOVE THE EYE OF THE HURRICANE!

  • IMPORTANT UPDATE:  Superintendent Griffin will be visiting SSMS on Monday December 3, 2012, from 11:00am – 1:00 pm.  He will be accompanied by Board Chairman Karen Almond. We will randomly be visiting classes to see our SSMS students in active engagement and learning.   Do what you do Hurricanes…I’m sure your excellence will shine!
  • I hope that you all had a restful and rejuvenating Holiday with your families.  As we approach the Holiday season, it is imperative that we maintain quality instruction and rigor for our students.  We have a lot of work to do.  The Leadership Team began breaking down the expectations and monitoring the progress of our School Improvement Plan using data from Edinsight.  We will be posting this information for your review.

  • Information to kick off our next MP Activity Day, on December 7, 2012, will be updated later this week.
  • During the months of November and December students at SSMS can learn about Winter Holidays Around the World as it applies to their current curriculum.  For more information, visit the Magnet Matters tab and click “What’s Happening”.
  • Flexible Scheduling Committee:  The committee members will be visiting Milwee and Millennium Middle School on Wednesday, November 28, 2012. Millennium has utilized a modified block schedule for approximately 10 years and Milwee is in it’s second year of inception.  They will be meeting with teachers at the respective schools and gathering information to present to the faculty.  If you have any questions you would like them to address, submit them to your Curriculum Areas representative by Tuesday.

SSMS Walks for Autism

TEAM SSMS Hurricanes:  “Find the Missing Piece”

  • PLC Curriculum areas will meet Wednesday, November 14th, from 8:30 – 9:10.  Check with your Curriculum Leader for meeting location.
  • Faculty Meeting will be Wednesday, November 14, 2012, from 3:05 – 4:00 pm.  Topic of discussion: Teacher Evaluation System

  • Flexible Scheduling Committee:  Brent Ougel has been selected to Chair the Flexible Scheduling Committee.  The committee members will be visiting Milwee and Millennium Middle School in the next view weeks.   • Magnet Night was a Great Success.  We hosted approximately 150 families.  Hats off to Mr. Fitzwater and all the Global LINK and Core Academic teachers that made this night memorable for many. Brandon Bradley, Student Government President, did a great job  speaking to the parents and students. Congratulate him when you get a chance.
  • Magnet PLC mark your calendars for: Thursday Nov 15, 2012 at 8:30 in Room 201
  • Another Shout out to Kathi Wells for organizing our first Annual “Bring Your Parent to School Day”!  During their “Academic Lunch Detention”, the Coaches provided them with tools to continue to make their students successful.  The unsung Hero who came up with this idea is …drum roll… Jessica Brantley.  Keep those ideas coming!  An additional Shout out from Kathi Wells… “A big thank you goes out to our coaches- Alicia Carver, Anne-Margret Strudgeon and Karen Gundal -for putting on a great workshop for our parents last week.  Also thanks goes to Josey Pagan, Yeshih Haile, Jessica Brantley, Peter Testa and Phyllis Testa for their help in making Bring your Parent to School Day a success.  We had over 100 parents during the two days.  Parents were impressed with all that teachers manage to do each day.  Thanks goes to all the teachers for showing the parents what middle school is really like! – Kathi Wells
  • American Education Week,will be observed from November 12‐16, 2012.This week is highlighted by an annual national celebration of public education which includes visitors to the schools. Parents, business leaders, and community members can enhance learning by going into a classroom for an hour or for the whole school day on the Seminole TeachIn Day which is being held on Tuesday, November 13, 2012.The contact for this day is Diane Taylor.   • Everyone who attended the Professional Development Mission I on Oct 3 and Nov 7, please fill out your learning log.  You can the learning log on the share folder in the Professional Development folder.  Please print out the one for your section and place them in Kathi Wells’ mailbox or office.  Deadline for submission of the forms is November 16.
  • PBS LearningMedia (pbslearningmedia.org) and The Henry Ford (thehenryford.org) are presenting the third annual Teacher Innovator Awardsto recognize innovative PreK – 12 educators, media specialists who use digital media to enhance student learning.
    What Can I Win?
    •  1st  PRIZE: The top TEN winners will participate in an all-paid, week-long “Innovation Immersion Experience” at The Henry Ford in Dearborn, Michigan, August 2013, plus receive a FREE PBS TeacherLine professional development course.
    •  2nd  PRIZE: TEN second place winners will receive a Promethean ActiView document camera.

  • UCF will host a forum on training and nutrition for young athletes and future Olympians on Wednesday, December 5, 2012, 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Morgridge International Reading Center on the main campus in East Orlando. The public is invited; admission and parking is free but event registration required. We would like to bring this event to the attention of your students and faculty members who may be interested in attending. It is aimed at young athletes, athletic coaches, parents and anyone who may be interested in nutrition, conditioning and human performance.The forum will include an opportunity for athletes to test on the latest equipment in UCF’s Human Performance Laboratory.   • Magnet Night is tonight!!! What is your Elevator Speech? Let’s show parents what this magnet is all about!
  • MISSION POSSIBLE- GOAL SETTING-ACCOMPLISHED:  It was great to walk through the halls on Friday and see the students actively engaged with setting their academic/personal goals.  You were great facilitators.
  • MISSION FLEXIBLE SCHEDULING 2013-2014: Thank you everyone for selecting a representative from each curriculum area to serve on our Flexible Scheduling Committee.  The representatives are:
    Science: M. Szentmiklosi; Math: J. Bennett, SS: A. Bingham, LA: J. Brantley, Electives: M. Orozco, ESE: J. Fenaughty, Reading: K. Lind, Coaches: Carver, Gundal & Strudgeon, Counselor: B. Ougel and your Admin Team.  The committee will be meeting later this week.
  • FLEXIBLE SCHEDULING PARKING LOT.  A tab has been added ( FS Parking Lot)  to post any questions/concerns you have about the Flexible Scheduling process.  All comments are welcome. Collaboratively we will work through concerns to provide a continuous model of support.
  • Bring your Parents to School Day:  November 5th & November 7th. There will be between 60 – 70 parents coming each day.  You will need to park in the back of the school on both days to open parking spots for our parents. Below is an updated list of students bringing parents on Monday and/or Wednesday.  Again, look them over and let Kathi Wells know if you need chairs.  Peter will be delivering the chairs on Monday morning. Additional parents may show up. If you need something during the day, call Ms. Wells @  (x31325).  If she is not there, call the front office and have them radio her

Bring your Parent to School Student list

  • Attention New Teachers to SSMS:  We will be beginning a book study with you, “The Leader In Me”  to introduce you to the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens and the centerpiece of our Magnet. Fitzwater will be contacting you regarding the meeting dates.
  • What aspects of teaching are most associated with student learning? According to John Hattie(2009), the best approaches that should be utilized include the following:
    • paying deliberate attention to learning intentions and success criteria
    • setting challenging tasks
    • providing multiple opportunities for deliberate practice
    • knowing when one (teacher and student) is successful in attaining these goals
    • understanding the critical role of teaching appropriate learning strategies
    • planning and talking about teaching
    • ensuring the teacher constantly seeks feedback information as to the success of his or her teaching on the students
