STAY CALM AND KEEP THE MOMENTUM GOING!

one-way-to-keep-momentum-going-is-to-have-constantly-greater-goals

Hello Hurricanes!  As we complete walkthroughs and have meaningful conversations with teachers, a common goal of staying the course and getting our students ready is in the air.  One of the greatest moments this year was witnessing the pride of our 7th graders as they participated in the Hurricane Challenge.  They realized that they did not achieve the victory alone, but with the help of all of the classmates. This will be how we make a difference this year, working as a team with ultimate goals of  increasing student achievement and student leadership.

WHO’S AFRAID OF FCAT? NOT SSMS!!!!

Countdown to reclaim our A+

Hello Hurricanes…….

The journey to reclaim our “A” began August 6, 2013.  We are now in the Countdown phase to the “Gatekeeper ..FCAT Writes!!, which will be administered on February 25, 2014.   Our Writing Proficiency target is 55%, which is an increase of 5% from 2013. Our 8th grade Language Arts team will be administering a third progress monitor to assess our students’ performance and target areas of concerns.  Dr. Fisher will be implementing a 3 week FCAT Writes Boot Camp February 8,15 & 22. The 8th grade Social Studies teachers will be facilitating  a DBQ (Document Based Question) Essay activity with their students, to reinforce the process of planning and responding to a prompt based on document based information in the text. Teachers across the campus are incorporating strategies to support this goal, because it truly “Takes A Village” to accomplish our common vision of excellence.

The Importance of a SMILE

Smile-for-Deli-blog

Hello Hurricanes…

As we approach the testing season, we know everyone is focused on providing opportunities to enhance student learning. The closer we get, the more anticipation will  build and administrators, students, teachers, counselors and parents feel the associated anxiety. We can only continue to move forward with the plans we have in place to support student learning. We may make tweaks along the way, but we must stay the course.

I wanted to share with you an excerpt from the MS Principal’s Weekly Update from Dr. Dehlinger.

“To help maintain a positive atmosphere and climate in your schools, John Hattie’ research (Visible Learning and the Science of How We Learn 2014) reinforces that importance of the simple smile.  Listed here are a few points Hattie shares about the research on the smile and how it relates to climate/learning:

  • Students will observe how you smile and use this as an index to tell that what mood you are in;
  • Your smile will enable students to rate you on approachability;
  • There will be  contagion effects in that when you smile at a student, he/she is likely to smile back, and also at his/her classmates;
  • A genuine smile is one of the most powerful tools a teacher can use to advantage;
  • Both parties will feel more at ease;
  • This meaningful human interaction will signal an open-two-way communication;
  • Smiling enables you to set the climate and context of an interaction;
  • The smile is correlated with comprehension and understanding!”

“Too often we underestimate the power of touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”        Leo Buscaglia
