FCAT Writes scores were released on Friday, May 23, 2014.  We performed approximately the same as we did last year, at 47% of our 8th graders receiving a score of 3.5 or higher on their essay.  Last year our raw data reflected 49% proficiency.  Once  non-accountability students are eliminated from the data ( students not enrolled between October 2013 – February 2014) we will have our “true” performance.  I would like to applaud our Language Arts teachers and Dr. Fisher for implementing many strategies to support our students prepare for this exam.  With the many changes in 8th grade LA teachers this year, this group working collaboratively made the difference.  Below is the SCPS Writing performance.  With the exception of 3 Middle Schools, the proficiency rate decreased.

Another Round of Applause for our Super Heroes

taw

This week was an opportunity to give special thanks to our Super Heroes.  We appreciate your dedication and commitment of excellence to our students at South Seminole Middle School. Thank you to PTSA and Phyllis Testa for also sponsoring acts of appreciation throughout the week. We would also like to thank Ms. Haile, Ms. Madrid and Mr. Motley for their help.  As I look at this these pictures, the following quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson comes to mind.

To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.

This is what it’s all about!!!!!!!

CELEBRATING OUR FAVORITE SUPERHEROES….YOU!!

teacher pics-001“You will give the people an ideal to strive towards. They will race behind you, they will stumble, they will fall. But in time, they will join you in the sun. In time, you will help them accomplish wonders.” – Superman, Man of Steel

It’s A Bird! It’s a Plane! No. It’s Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week!  May 5 -9 we will celebrate our SSMS Super Heroes…YOU!!!! Teaching is a profession like no other. Many careers require dedication, hard work, a skills set, charisma and intelligence. However teaching also requires more unique qualities; the ability to strike the delicate balance between discipline and freedom; to encourage individuals while considering what is best for the group but most of all it requires a genuine desire and willingness to care for others. It goes without saying that knowledge and learning is vital to enable us to live our lives. While most of us appreciate the fact, many of us don´t appreciate those who dedicate their lives to the cause: the teachers and staff!
