Hello Hurricanes,

When students know what their learning target is they are better able to set goals and monitor their own progress. On average, the practice of having students track their own progress was associated with a 32 percentile point gain in their achievement (www.marzanoresearch.com/research/strategy20_trackingprogress.aspx). As we continue to move toward our goal of “Teaching Down the Gap”. Review the process of facilitating the learning goal.

Teachers explicitly instruct and provide opportunities for students to analyze data and set meaningful learning goals by:

  • Analyzing class and student data to set goals and change instruction.
  • Working collaboratively with students to reflect on their learning progress and performance.
  • Establishing processes for students to continuously collect, analyze, and use data to track progress, improve performance, and reach their learning goals (i.e. continuous improvement tools, data notebooks, tracking tools, capacity matrix and/or portfolios.)

I wanted to highlight one of the quotes from our Culturally Relevant Teaching Series Wednesday morning. It is a powerful statement….

 “I always tell folks that I grew up black and poor.  I then ask them why am I not part of the achievement gap?  It is because I had OPPORTUNITIES and EXPECTATIONS. My teachers closed those gaps for me so I am                            not a part of what we euphemistically call the achievement gap.”

BUILDING LEADERSHIP

The Lead2Feed World Hunger Leadership Challenge is a team-based, service learning program that fosters teamwork in an effort to help students learn and develop key leadership skills as they take action to solve real-life hunger issues. Throughout this leadership program, students will participate in a student leadership development program adapted from David Novak’s book, Taking People With You. In addition, you will have access to USA TODAY’s e-Newspaper, video messages from David Novak and social media outlets to connect and communicate throughout the program.

 Students will turn to pg 133 in their Leadership Notebook, Play Video prior to activity…

“BEING COMFORTABLE WITH BEING UNCOMFORTABLE”

photoHurricanes’ Exploring Learning from Reading Edge, Bobble Heads, Speech & Debate and our youngest Hurricane “Baby Casiano” is right in the middle of Home Economics’ cooking activities : ) Learning is taking place at SSMS!

We are often leery of changing routine or changing what we know works, whether it be in our professional or personal lives.  As we look at the new assessments and the expectations of our students, we realize that the rigor and student tasks are higher. We must find innovative ways to meet the needs of our students and take them to the next level.  I saw this on Ms. Firios’ board today during walk-throughs, “Being Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable”  this quote really hit me.  This sums up the learning process and the risks we and ask our students  take daily. It means that we must continue  to learn new things and push ourselves to think about doing things better and more efficiently than we currently are doing them.  Sometimes this means switching or experimenting with a new instructional tool; sometimes it means using your existing toolbox more effectively; sometimes it means listening to educators with less experience in order to learn new trends. And always it means we never stay the same and we are always challenging the status quo.  This is uncomfortable… but it is necessary.

In the words of Ashton Kutcher:
” I’m continually trying to make choices that put me against my own comfort zone. 
As long as you’re uncomfortable, it means you’re growing.”

 Hello Hurricanes!!!!!,

Indicators 24 and 26 are part of every element…because ALL means ALL. The Hawk, Indicator 24, states that the teacher scans the room making note of when students are not engaged and takes overt action. Indicator 26 states that the teacher uses response rate techniques to maintain student engagement in questions….Simply stated..Keep ALL kids engaged and participating in the lesson.  Ms. Odom utilizes white boards for students to display their answers in a “brief” review to access student knowledge on the upcoming Chapter 1  test.  If you need additional support with ideas and innovations to engage students in class, don’t hesitate to contact your Instructional Coach, Curriculum Administrator or Peer teachers.
