READING, READING EVERYWHERE!!

readingedgeThe SSMS Reading teachers present: “Living on the EDGE of Reading Instruction~ How the EDGE Reading Program enhances all Curriculum Areas”.

The Reading team provided the staff with an overview of the Reading Edge Curriculum. Teachers were provided with student samples, reading strategies and rubrics to support the ELA/Writing initiative for FSA. The goal of this professional development was to provide you with take-aways to utilize in your specific content. In your PLCs brainstorm ways to use expository text, short stories, novels, poetry, drama, and speeches to help students become more strategic readers and learn to respond to text effectively using the writing process. Focus on  instruction using the four reading strategies (clarifying, predicting, questioning, and summarizing), building vocabulary and fluency, and on core reading skills such as identifying main ideas, sequencing information and events, comparing and contrasting, distinguishing fact from opinion, recognizing cause/effect and problem/solution relationships, drawing conclusions, and analyzing story elements.  Be sure to include your plan in your weekly notes. Thank you in advance for your support.

SSMS FUTURE LEADERS!

IMG_5687SSMS 2014 – 2015 BETA Competition Team

Hello Hurricanes… I wanted to share an excerpt below with you from Ms. Everette-Talley…

“Beta competition was a success. They were model leaders the entire competition. They worked hard at their competitions. We competed in arts, banner, science, math, social studies, language arts, living literature, tower of power, speech, special talent, poetry, quiz bowl, and spotlight your club. Even though we did not win any of the top 3 places, we did great for our first time competing against veteran schools who know what to expect. We came right behind the top places either in fourth place or somewhere in the top 8 or so.  We are very proud of how they did and we’re extremely proud of how they handled not winning. They could have easily started complaining, been angry, or very upset and sad. But instead they showed amazing sportsmanship. They remained positive and upbeat and even started planning what they were going to do next year and how to improve. Even our 8th graders, who won’t be here, were involved with how to improve for next year. It was truly inspiring to see young people be leaders when things aren’t going their way. Their behavior was very admirable. The Beta Convention was an awesome experience for our students. It was nice to see them mature into the little leaders they are right now.”

Thank you to Ms. Talley and Ms. Hernandez  for your Leadership and Guidance with our Students!
