A TIME TO BE THANKFUL!!!

IMG_8098

SSMS teachers on 2nd floor take some time to Sharpen the Saw and spend quality time with one another for a nice Thanksgiving potluck.

Hello Hurricanes!!!

Thanksgiving is a perfect time to take a break from the things that make us busy throughout the year and to reflect, not on what we do not have but what we have.  It is a good time to consider why we are here and why we do what we do.  In my four years at South Seminole Middle School, I have come to appreciate our uniqueness— the things that set us apart from other schools.  As Lonnie Moore stated at our lighthouse informal review, “our culture has transformed”.  We have an amazing student body, not perfect, but full of energy, eager to learn, willing to change, taking responsibility for their actions and are excited to be a part of our Hurricane Nation.  We have innovating teachers who care for our students and go the extra mile to help them learn.  We also have a committed staff that works hard daily to make SSMS an environment conducive to learning.  And finally, a beautiful “leaderized” campus destined to get even better in the years to come.  I am grateful that we are continuing to make progress on our Lighthouse status and embracing our “Growth Mindset” mantra.   We have much to be thankful for at SSMS and it starts with you.  Thank you for your support throughout the year.  It is because of you that our best days are ahead of us, not behind us.

Have a Blessed Thanksgiving!

EXPANDING STUDENTS LEARNING!

SSMS’s café manger, Angelena Phillips, fosters the 7 habits and synergizes with Ms. Bingham’s home economics club! She is teaching them how to complete a recipe that the kitchen uses. The central focus of home economics education is the well-being of people within the context of their personal, family, community and work roles. Home economics education is about becoming independent, connecting with others and taking action towards preferred futures that support individual and family well-being. Through home economics education, students become empowered, active and informed members of society. Home economics education has the potential to play a major role in supporting young people to participate effectively in changing social, cultural and economic times. In order to capitalize on this potential, teachers and curriculum leaders must connect with students’ worlds, use contemporary educational research as a guide to planning and develop practices that are EMPOWERING.

HURRICANE “ENERGY” IS IN THE AIR!!

IMG_8001

8th grade Hurricanes participated in their first Energy Carnival! Students engaged in the following learning stations which were aligned to the corresponding science concepts noted in parenthesis: Roller Coasters (Kinetic Energy-Potential Energy), Bumper Cars (Newton’s Laws), Fortune Tellers (Energy Go Fish), Animal Petting Zoo (Energy Transfer food webs), Scavenger Hunts (Energy Transformations), and Alternative Energy Web Quests! The 8th grade Science Team created this module for students to review content knowledge in preparation for their upcoming unit assessment. What a creative way to engage students in a fun yet meaningful review. Way to go Ms. Szentmiklosi, Mr. Kuh and Ms. Stalker, you are definitely reflecting your “SWAG” vision of your students.
