Hello Hurricanes!!! We have so many celebrations and congratulations this week!!! Congratulations to Mr. Perri for being recognized as Cigna’s Feature Teacher, Mr. Motley as Cigna’s Feature Support Staff, and Chloe Zijl as Cigna’s Feature Student representatives for SSMS! Thanks, Dr. Griffin, Ms. Almond, and Ms. Schaffner for recognizing these amazing Hurricanes. STUDENT ENGAGEMENT IS FUNdamental!!!!

13000067_1190062054346270_8475702035329652509_n

Mr. Culberson’s students engaged in a “Gallery Walk” while using the information to draw conclusions about how events led to a separation of the North and South.  Gallery Walk is a discussion technique that gets students out of their chairs and into active engagement. The advantage of the method is its flexibility. A Gallery Walk holds a variety of benefits for students and teachers. For students, it’s a chance to share thoughts in a more intimate, supportive setting than a larger class discussion. For teachers, it’s a chance to gauge the depth of student understanding of particular concepts and to note and use misconceptions to shape instruction.  The Gallery Walk strategy is aligned with our goal of increasing content rigor, because it: 1. dedicates time for students to practice discussing, debating, organizing, and writing about course content rather than just hearing ideas presented by the teacher; and 2. promotes the use of higher‐order thinking skills like analysis, evaluation, and synthesis when teachers choose levels of abstraction when designing questions.  Continue to STORM, Hurricanes!

BLENDED LEARNING IN ACTION-SOMETHING TO TWEET ABOUT!

FullSizeRenderThis week we had the pleasure of hosting distinguished visitors to SSMS.  Although we were in the midst of 8th grade Science testing, our teachers ensured students were still engaged in rigorous instruction.  In fact, Dr. Walt Griffin tweeted about his positive experience in Ms. Palermo’s class.  Our Civics PLC has implemented a blended approach to  instruction utilizing a station-rotation model.  Through this model, they are providing students with opportunities to learn in centers featuring small group instruction, independent practice and cooperative groups.  Through these varied instructional methods they are able to differentiate and individualized instruction to meet the needs of all students. Way to go, Civics!
