LEADSeries: MEET OUR NEW HURRICANES~Week 7

photogrid_1475258302369

Hello Hurricanes!!!! This Week  STORM TALK”  spotlights  Thomas Wiles, Math Teacher .

Where are you from? I am from a small town in Virginia named Chatham. Very few people know about it and have probably only seen signs for it. I went to college at Milligan College in Johnson City, TN then moved to Louisville, KY for 12 years. I have been living in Florida for almost 3 years now.

What do you like to do in your free time? I love spending time with my wife. We go to Disney often or to the beach. We like to do things outdoors even though we sweat a lot. I enjoy a relaxing round of golf any chance that I can get it. While free time is limited I like to stay active. And any day that I get to spend in the water is a good day.

Share with us about your travels. I have been to almost all of the states east of the Mississippi River but the only state that I have been to west of the Mississippi is Hawaii (it’s sad I know). I have also been to Europe visiting England, France, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, and Greece. I love seeing things that I have only seen on TV but wish they would invent teleportation already.

What was your first job? My first job I was a life guard at a local country club. Very small but I was making $5 an hour so I was happy that I could fill up my ’76 Chevy Nova all by myself. I have had many jobs since then from constructing bleachers to a barista at Starbucks. I consider myself well rounded.

Tell us about your favorites. I love watching movie, TV shows, sports and I love to eat food while I’m doing it. I can’t possibly give you a favorite movie because there are far too many good ones but I do love me some Star Wars. I spend way too much time watching TV but I love the entertainment value. The Green Bay Packers are my favorite football team and I watch a ton of college sports including my teams, the Virginia Tech Hokies and the Louisville Cardinals.

What is something that most people don’t know about you? I went to military school from 7th to 12th grade. And I had my hair cut every two weeks for those 6 years.

CONTINUE TO STORM, Mr. Wiles!

Hello Hurricanes!!!! This Week  STORM TALK”  spotlights  Ms. Greta Powell, Choral Director.

Where are you from?  I am from Minot, North Dakota where it has snowed every month of the year! My parents, my son, and I all graduated from the same High School!

Tell us about your family.  I have 3 grown sons, 2 daughters-in-law, 1 grandson, 1 granddaughter and 3 dogs! Our youngest is starting at Full Sail University this fall for Music Production and Guitar.

What’s the scariest thing you ever did?  My husband and I packed up everything we own and moved to Florida this summer without securing jobs, and without selling our home in North Dakota! We just jumped in and had faith that things would work themselves out. We also concentrate on the positive things like we get to live in Florida! No more snow!!

What hobbies do you enjoy? I do lots of creative things such as crafting, scrapbooking, photography, cross-stitching, crochet, art, and re-finishing furniture.

What are some of your favorites?  I am a Harry Potter, Star Wars, Star Trek, Game of Thrones, Twilight, Dexter fan! I love crazy and dark TV, pretty much anything scary. I also love to read dark literature and dark young adult literature, too! I lighten things up by watching “FRIENDS” and “Who’s the Boss?” I’ve traveled to New York City, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. New York was the best!!

CONTINUE TO STORM, MS. POWELL!

LEADSeries MEET OUR NEW HURRICANES ~ Week 5

img_0818

When you were little, did you have any crazy ideas about what you wanted to become when you ‘grew up’?  When I was young I always wanted to be a clown, it seemed like such a fun and amazing thing to be. I never thought of it as work, just something that made me happy.

What brought you to education? After 24 years in the restaurant business I decided to change careers. I originally wanted to go into psychology because I have always been intrigued as to why people do, say, and behave in different ways, I eventually chose education because I also wanted to do something that was more rewarding, had purpose, a profession were sharing my life experiences may help others.

Describe what makes you happy? Spending time with my parents and children is the best thing in the world. I enjoy social events that involve dancing, live music, and up beat atmosphere.

What do you like to do in your free time? I enjoy anything that has to do with the arts. All music, theater, drawing, art galleries, etc.

Share with us about your travels.  I have been to 29 states in the U.S. I hope to visit them all one day.

Tell us about a couple of your favorite movies. There are way too many favorite movies to pick just one but I do have favorite actors that I follow. They include Denzel Washington, Tom Hanks, Jamie Foxx.

KEEP STORMING MR. MOTLEY!!!!

Shout to Everyone on an Amazing Open House!!!! Many compliments from parents!

Melissa and Kim are rocking integrating literacy in science content! Look at this example. In their first of three LDC modules, students completed multiple Claims-Evidence-Reasoning graphic organizers with an ultimate goal of writing a quality evidence-based lab report. The second part of the LDC module will result in their Science Fair Project.  Their class WIG establishes a content goal in support of our school wide WIG. Many of these students are already progressing towards meeting this goal!!!  Check out the Student’s Conclusion…. Rock on Science!!!!!

LEADSeries MEET OUR NEW HURRICANES ~ WEEK 4

Hello Hurricanes!!!! This Week  STORM TALK”  spotlights  Ms. Minell Ellerbe, Academic Intervention Teacher.

Tell us about your family and where you are from.  I am a part of a military family. My son is 24 and is a Licensed Social Worker for Kansas City Public Schools. My two daughters, ages 17 and 7, attend Orange County Public Schools. I also have two Poodles, Diego and Pebbles. My children and I moved here by way of Kentucky but we originated from Virginia. Kentucky is home to the Kentucky Derby and Fort Knox where they keep all of the United States Government Gold.

What are some of your favorites and how do spend your free time?  My favorite football team is the Pittsburgh Steelers (Mean Joe Greene era). I love anything Tyler Perry. My favorite movie is The diary of a Mad Black Woman. My favorite type of food is Italian and my favorite color is purple. I enjoy eating at non chain restaurants, and attending free outside social activities like jazz shows, concerts, fairs. I volunteer with Homeless Shelter, Senior Adult Living Home, and the Information Desk & Special Events Department at church.

Describe what makes you happy.  Things which make me happy are accomplishing my goals, seeing my children attain their goals, and trying new things.

What brought you to education?  I began working with children in the Mental Health field and found that most of the child clients I interacted with was having some difficulties with behavior in the educational system. I began substitute teaching to see if my mental health and teaching experience could positively impact those students who were having behavior issues. I found that I enjoyed the area in which I was placed in the role of substitute and transitioned to become a permanent part of the educational system.

Share about a teacher who made an impact on your life.  The two teachers that most impacted me in my life were Mr. Walter Bronner and Mr. Royce Hart. Mr. Bronner was my basketball coach and I see him almost every time I visit home. He was like a father figure. Mr. Royce Hart was my track and field coach. He helped me develop competitively to compete on a state and national level in track and field.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?  I have hunted deer, squirrels, rabbits, and turtle for food.

What do you like most about SSMS?  The things that I like the most at SSMS are the teachers and their love for their students. They really go the extra mile to ensure the students are getting what they need in order to be the best person they can possibly be. Also, the administration is very open to trying new tools to engage the population of students attending SSMS.

STORM ON Ms. Ellerbe!!

LEADSeries MEET OUR NEW HURRICANES ~ WEEK 3

IMG_0731

Hello Hurricanes!!!! This Week  STORM TALK”  spotlights  Ms. Autumn Sirmeyer, Band Director.

Tell us about your family.  I just had my first child in December. His name is Benedict and he is the center of my world! He looks so much like my dad and that makes me super happy because my dad raised me by himself my entire life and worked really hard to make sure I had what was best in life the best he could. In addition to my son I live with my adoring husband, Ryan, our furry babies. We have an older cat named Cecilia and a 6 year old Maltese named Lily.

What volunteer activities are you involved with? I am so excited to share the organization that I volunteer for! I am actually a puppy raiser and trainer for Canine Companions for Independence. Basically, CCI is an organization that provides service dogs to those with certain disabilities or also to facilities such as court houses. I receive a puppy when they are 8 weeks old and then raise them for well over a year teaching basic commands, socialization and proper manners. Then, the sad day comes to turn that puppy back in so that they can do to “puppy college” and learn more advanced commands that will better make them of service to others. Then, they go through a placement to see who will be their “forever person” and then the life changing begins. It’s quite an emotional event. My first puppy was named Callejo. He’s the beautiful black dog you can see in the photo. He was just turned in back in May and I only get monthly “report cards” telling me how his progress is. So far, so good! Yes, this is a bit bittersweet. If he were to “flunk” out I would have the option to adopt him but him passing is the ideal goal. I will find out in November if he will be placed with someone. Then, I will get to reunite with him before passing on his leash. I know there will be many, many tears but most of them happy for being able to truly make a dramatic difference in someone’s life.

What are some of your favorites?  I am a huge Harry Potter and Sherlock fan! Yes, I even named my son Benedict after my favorite actor in Sherlock, Benedict Cumberbatch 🙂 I am a Slytherin with a hint of Ravenclaw. I truly feel the books ARE better than the movies but if ever I am having a bad day, the movies immediately make me feel better. In addition to watching movies and reading books I enjoy board gaming. I am super competitive and love winning. No one likes to play me in Scattergories because I literally win every time. I am a diehard FSU Seminole and bleed garnet and gold. I love Saturday football games but could care less about pro football— even though I somehow won my fantasy football league last year. Go figure.

If you could have dinner with any one person, who would it be and why?   Kate Middleton!!! I have a sort of obsession with the royal family and pretty much all things British. My son’s nursery is UK themed 🙂

Share with us about your travels.  You would never guess a traveling girl like me has a fear of flying…. I have been almost every state (except a few Western states. I REALLY want to travel to California quite badly). Outside of the states I have been to Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, the Bahamas, Jamaica, Haiti, England, Ireland, France, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium… just to name a few. I really have a passion for travel and hope that I can start back up at it again once my son is a little older.

What was your first job? My first job out of college was actually at Universal studios. I worked at Dueling Dragons (now called Dragon challenge) and I was a ride operator. I used to test ride the coaster every morning by myself with no one else on it and it was always so relaxing. Fast forward to now and I barely ever ride roller coasters anymore because … I am getting older. ha
