MTSS (PBS & RtI)
MTSS at SSMS
MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) is a data-driven, multi-tiered approach to the early identification and support of students with learning and/or behavioral needs. MTSS is not a program but a process: a way to identify who is at-risk and, more importantly, why. RtI (Response to Intervention) and PBS(Positive Behavior Supports) are two critical components of MTSS.
All students receive our Tier 1 Universal supports. If a teacher is concerned about a student’s academic or behavior performance, please contact a guidance counselor. The MTSS team can review the data and determine if further supports are needed.
PBS at SSMS
Positive Behavior Supports (PBS) are used at SSMS to model, demonstrate and reinforce our expectations for our students. PBS relies on accurate and reliable discipline data to understand the behaviors occurring across campus. An analysis of the data allows a school team to identify the problem areas, brainstorm interventions such as where and what to teach, reward the students exhibiting the expected behavior, and communicate findings to the staff, students, and families.

Discipline Procedures and PBS/MTSS
Below are links to view classroom, office, and crisis discipline procedures, the behavior management table, and the Flow Chart. The Behavior Tracking Form below should be used to document interventions you are making to assist students in making the right choices.
If you think a student should be referred to the MTSS team for additional interventions, please contact the student’s guidance counselor, first. If it is deemed that the student should be referred to the MTSS team for behavior, please complete the following:
STORM Bucks-Students may earn STORM Bucks for displaying appropriate behaviors that exemplify the school-wide expectations. They may then turn these bucks in for reinforcers at designated times througout the school year.
Positive Behavior Referral- YOU ROCK! Teachers can recognize a student’s continuous demonstration or strong Improvement toward the Hurricane Expectations. The positive behavior form can also be found in the teacher lounge areas where mailboxes are located. Please complete the form and send it to the discipline office. Students will then be called down to receive recognition of the positive referral.
